Named for the company that built them, Wates houses are another of the prefabricated concrete properties built after the Second World War. However, their design was in production for less than a decade and, like all the others, that’s how long they were supposed to last. As materials and labour were both available in stark quantities, the construction is not acceptable by today’s standards and, as a result, they have also been deemed defective.
The large concrete panels formed during construction were produced in factories and assembled on-site, making the entire building process extremely cheap and simple. There are five distinct styles of Wates house, labelled A-E. The recognisable external structure comprises tartan-patterned concrete panels with internal precast floors and walls.
